In 1916 a 36-foot sea sled was the world’s fastest cruising cabin boat at 34 mph. in 1918 a 55-footer made 55 mph with only 1,800 hp while carrying a 10,000-pound bomber. with its airplane’s engines racing, the boat went fast enough to launch the plane from the rough english channel to attack germany.. A plan for an inverted v hull sailboat called "sea mite" was published in "science and mechanics" and "boat builder handbook" as craft print project no.324. this appears to be based on hickman's sea sled design.. Compared to the narrow and heavy boats of the day, the “sled” was stunningly fast. to be sure the box shape and flattish bottom would pound itself to pieces in a sea, and it was not pretty, but speed made up for those shortcomings in many minds..
